What is TMJ disorder/dysfunction?

TMJ disorder occurs when the temporomandibular joint comes out of alignment. Jaw pain is one of the significant symptoms you may feel when this misalignment occurs. Other symptoms you can experience can be a feeling of popping or a clicking noise while eating or talking. TMJ dysfunction can lead to headaches, muscle spasms, neck pain, jaw pain and sometimes toothaches.

Some people may experience their jaw locking open at times. In addition, when you open or close your mouth, the lower jaw (mandible) may not move in a straight motion. The mandible may move or shift from side to side. This imbalance of the jaw movement is a likely contributor to your neck or head pain.
